This unique device translates an analog voltage into quadrature signals. These are signals that are 90 degrees out of phase. The speed at which the signals are output is dependent on the the applied control voltage. The device has the ability to operate in two modes, both of which are generated at a rate directly related to the level of the analog voltage applied to the Vin pin. The analog voltage reference sets the span of operation and can be tied either to Vss or an external precision reference voltage for normal operation.
If you have ever worked with motion control systems you will know how valuable it would be to have something capable of generating high quality quadrature signals on demand. The ability to change the speed of the signal on the fly is a huge benefit, especially when you can change the direction of that signal AND have a dead band built in to the center of the span to help take care of the inertia from direction changes!
