This remarkable device allows high current loads to be used in environments where the damaging effects of current spikes or ‘brown outs’ are not acceptable. Lean manufacturing often requires the use of parts or devices that are not as efficient as they should be, even though they may be well suited for the task. Some examples of this are motors, pumps and halogen lamps. The RampStart may very well save you from the huge costs and time penalties that can be incurred by re-designs and upgrades to prevent electrical noise from creating faults which are very difficult to isolate.
When used with pumps and similar devices, pressure waves and surges which can cause bursts and leaks are completely removed by the ramp effect during startup. The gentle ramp action allows more accurate pressure level control by virtue of the fact that the minor adjustments are made in much smaller increments.
It is important to note that the start up current draw for these types of loads can sometimes be as much as 500% more than their run current, which requires the use of more powerful, and consequently more expensive, power supplies. Furthermore it is generally poor practice to start such loads at full power as the physical stress on the drive train, or pressure system can be detrimental over time. What is needed is a gentle start that builds up to full power in a smooth progressive sweep.
The RampStart does exactly this by providing a precision Pulse Width Modulated current sink which automatically increases it’s pulse width from zero all the way up to 100% over a period of about one second.
